Driving on the other side (left)is for most people a problem for just half an hour. Furthermore the traffic in Bali is different then in the West. It looks more chaotic. It looks like rules are hardly known and you have to pay more attention than what you are used to. You must be aware that a lot of unexpected things will happen. After a while you will see that this way of driving has advantages too. Everyone must pay attention! Officially you need an international driver’s license. This licence is normally only valid for one year. To show your national licence is ok most of the time. If a policeman wants or needs money he will not agree with this licence and that means that you have to pay 30.000 idr or more if you could not stay cool and nice. Better for you is not trying to change the world in here even if you hate this Indonesian way of life. If you yourself don’t want to drive you can hire a driver or, as many purchasers do, get a gardener, who can drive a car also. Transport with a minivan, called bemo, is quickly and easy. If you give a sign they will stop and bring you as far as you need. Sometimes you need several bemo’s to reach your destination. The price is very low.
