Influence of religion on daily life

Bali Religion

In Bali Hinduism is very important in public life. Every day you can see the many celebrations. Islam and Christianity are a small minority of about 5 percent. The different religions live peacefully together and without problems on this island which possibly for this reason is called “The Island of the Gods”. Sacrifices are a normal view in the streets and are done two times a day for each house, office, restaurant and there where people live. For this in general a sarong is used. The sacrifices consist of all small things the Gods would like. Can be flowers, food or sometimes a cup of coffee with a cigarette. You will understand that sometimes this looks silly to Western people nevertheless it is very serious and earns all our respect. 30 Till 50 days a year are religious holidays. The number depends on rural - and family obligations. Hinduism comes originally from India and is not easy to understand for Western people. It is a religion of feelings and mysteries. It is astonishing how welcome Western people are at the celebrations in the temple. Attending the monthly full-moon ceremony is an unforgettable event. Outside, in the dark, under the full moon, surrounded by the happy people is a pleasant experience for those who are interested.
